Chapter 24
After O’Reilly and his lacky left, Higgins started cursing everyone around him. He went into his office, took a couple of belts of whiskey, and then punched some numbers into the phone and after a ring or two, it was picked up.
“Zack” Higgins commanded. “Get your ass over here right now, and bring your brother and a couple of your pals. I got a job for you that can’t wait.”
“Okay, Kevin. Me and the boys are on our way. What do you need done.”
“I don’t want to talk about it on the phone. Just get your ass over here now.” His voice started to rise. He didn’t like anyone questioning him when he asked them to do something. When he told someone that something needed doing, he didn’t want anyone asking what it was, but just wanted them to blindly obey as if his word was law and as a matter of fact, around these parts, it was.
“Sure thing boss, whatever you say” and he hung up the phone. He knew that it must be urgent because Higgins never asked him to do anything unless it was really important. He also knew not to piss Higgins off. Higgins’s temper was legendary in this part of the country. More than one person had found out the hard way that you don’t argue with the likes of Higgins, not unless you wanted to end up in a heap of trouble.
As soon as he got off the phone with Higgins, he called his brother and two of their friends. As soon as they arrived, they headed on over to Higgins’s office to take care of whatever it was that Kevin wanted, no questions asked.
After he got through talking to Zack, the Sheriff took a couple more belts of whiskey. He sat back in his chair, a smile coming across his face. He started to feel the effects of the booze, which was not a particularly good thing. Higgins had a nasty personality, but when he had a few too many shots under his belt, he could turn on you quite suddenly and violently.
