Chapter 25
Joe Bob, a farm boy with limited intelligence, turned to Zack and asked. “Hey Zack, what’s so friggin’ important that I had to drop everything and come with you to see that Higgins.”
“You can be sure that when the boss calls, it’s real important. You don’t want to cross him.”
“He don’t seem so tough to me.” Joe Bob replied. “He’s just the local sheriff, is all, and he don’t scare me none.”
“Joe Bob, don’t let his looks fool you. You don’t want to piss him off, believe me. You’re a good pal and all, but if you tick him off, you’re on your own.” Zack warned.
“Yeah, okay. His shit smells like everyone else’s, is all I’m sayin’.”
“Just keep your opinion to yourself and everything will be fine.”
“Yeah okay Zack, whatever you say. Just don’t like him and his snot nosed attitude.” After that, he sat back in his seat, looking out the window.
Billy, Zack’s younger brother was driving. He had done a couple of jobs for the boss before and he knew that his brother was right.
“Hey Zack, what’s he want this time?”
“I asked him that and he practically cut me a new arsehole. He’s some pissed this time. I think he’d been hitting the bottle as well, and you know what he’s like when he’s drunk”
“Shit” Billy muttered. “That’s all we need; Sheriff Higgins with a burr up his ass wanting us to do his dirty work.”
“Don’t worry. Just keep quiet, hear what he has to say, and then we’ll leave and go do it. It’ll be a piece of cake.” Zack tried to sound convincing, but he wasn’t the least bit convinced himself.
Billy said nothing more, just drove to see what awaited them. It probably would be fun though. The last time he helped out the boss, it sure was fun. That time, Billy got to put a beatin’ on some stranger who was passing through town. The guy had done nothing wrong; Higgins just took a dislike to him and wanted him taken care of. That was sure fun. This time, Billy brought along his pistol, just in case more persuasion was needed than a simple shit kicking. Yeah, Billy thought, this is gonna be a lot of fun.
The fourth person, Jethro, had been friends with the Clayburn brothers, Zack and Billy for many years. He too had been along for these jobs set up by the boss. He was always quiet, but Zack and Billy both knew that he was reliable in a pinch. They were glad to have him along. Zack was a little concerned about Joe Bob though. He had never been involved in one of Higgins’s jobs before, and Zack felt a little apprehensive bringing him along. Oh well, Zack thought. It was too late now. What’s done is done. I just hope he behaves and keeps his mouth shut.
Five minutes later, they were pulling in front of the sheriff’s office. They got out of the car and went in to see what the boss needed. Zack was sure that whatever it was, violence would be a part of it.
