Chapter 26
The sky began to darken an ominous grey as lightning flashed in the distance. As Jake drove along the back road, the car started making strange gear-grinding noises like it was about to break apart at any moment.
“That’s just what I needed; to have the car start acting up in this God-forsaken part of the country.” Jake cursed and pulled over to the side of the road just as the car sputtered and then died.
As he got out of the car, the skies opened up and he was soaked through to the skin.
“That just about makes my day perfect” Jake muttered to himself.
In the distance, he could see lights flickering.
“Looks like I’m in luck. There seems to be some sort of civilization after all.”
Jake pulled his collar up around his neck to try to keep somewhat dry but it didn’t help at all. He was already soaked and beginning to get a chill when he finally reached a small run down shack that hadn’t seen a fresh coat of paint for many years. The porch to this ramshackle hovel was sitting on an angle, as if a strong wind would dislodge it and send it crashing to the garbage-strewn front yard.
He began to get a bad feeling about this place and wondered if he should just leave or knock for help. He was just about to turn around when the door opened and an older man appeared at the door. The man was dressed in a pair of dirty coveralls that seemed to be held together by mere threads.
Jake’s apprehension didn’t ease up when he smelled a foul odor coming from the man. It was as if this man, or what Jake thought was a man, was rotting in front of him. There were lesions on his right cheek that had a green mold-like growth appearing on them. Jake recoiled, moved back a step or two and bumped his head on what he thought was the post holding up the front of the house. He felt like he was going to pass out and reached up to where he had bumped his head and pulled his hand back to see it covered in blood. He tried to turn and run but just then he felt another thump to his head and just as he was passing out, he heard someone say.
“I got him pappy.”
“Yep, you sure did son.” cackled the old man with the rotting cheek.
After that, everything went black.
