Chapter 34
When Sean and Miller entered, Miss Stevens looked up and a worried look came over her face. The last time these two had paid a visit to her boss, she had to listen to his ranting and raving for a good fifteen minutes. She didn’t like Higgins, but he paid her well and so she stayed on. However, she didn’t like being berated by him especially when all she was doing was what she was supposed to be doing: her job.
She didn’t like the fact that the two outsiders had come back again. She feared her boss when he got like he had the last time.
O’Reilly mistook the look for knowledge into the attack that they had been through; not realizing the real meaning was her fear of her boss, and her treatment by him when they had left. He spoke roughly to her, not wanting to get attitude from her or anyone else in this shit hole of a place. He was itching for a fight.
“I want to see your boss, and I want to see him now!”
Miss Stevens cringed a little. Here she was again, doing her job, not causing any trouble, and she’s being treated like garbage by this stranger. She had had enough.
“He’s busy right now!” She snapped at him. She would soon regret giving grief to O’Reilly.
“Don’t give me any of your crap, honey!” Sean leaned over her desk in a threatening gesture. “I know he’s in, and I don’t have time for your fucking games. Now, buzz me in, or do I have to come around there and do it myself?”
Miss Stevens seemed to lose what little fight she had in her.
“I’m sorry sir for speaking to you like that. It’s just that he’s in a meeting with the mayor at the moment and said he wasn’t to be disturbed under any circumstances. He doesn’t like interruptions.”
O’Reilly still hadn’t calmed down.
“I don’t give a damn what he does and doesn’t like sister. Buzz me in right now before I lose my cool. You don’t want to be near me if I do.”
She didn’t doubt a word he was saying, not at all. She began to shake and when she spoke, she stuttered a little.
“I’m s..s..sorry, sir. I’ll admi..mi.mit you right a.a.away.”
“And don’t press the intercom. Just open the door and we’ll take it from there.”
He glared at her for what seemed like an eternity, before she pressed the button. They walked past her and entered Higgins’ inner sanctum. She breathed a sigh of relief after they were gone. I don’t need this shit anymore, she thought. Tomorrow, I’m going to tell that little prick Higgins that he can take this job and shove it up his ass. Of course, she knew she couldn’t do that. She needed this spot, shitty or not, and so she would just keep her mouth shut and put up with all the crap she got from him and anyone that came to see him.
“Shit!” Stevens sighed. She knew that this was to be her lot in life for a long time to come.
